 Ammonite is the fossil of an aquatic animal, of the order Cephalopods, of the suborder of ammonides. Ammonites were an extremely common species on earth in the Paleozoic and Mesozoic centuries. More than 5,000 different species have been found.

    The ammonite fossil is spiral in shape, resembling the ram's horn. It took its name from Ammon, the god of the Egyptians who in many performances appears to wear the ram's horns. They have been found in many parts of the world, and in Greece, in the region of Epidaurus. Recently, large deposits of ammonites have been discovered in Madagascar and Canada.
